The Dung Beetledung beetle

The dung beetle is also known as the scarab beetle. The ancient Egyptians revered it and its image is inscribed on many Egyptian monuments, jewellery and ornaments.

In South Africa it is a familiar sight, gathering the dung for which it is named and rolling it backward to a suitably soft spot. The beetle buries its dung a few centimetres underground and then feeds on it for several days or weeks. Dung beetles manage to manipulate spheres of herbivore dung over seemingly impossible terrain and sometimes for large distances.

They put themselves at risk from predators (mostly birds) when two or more dung beetles fight over a particularly desirable ball of dung.

The female dung beetle also uses the dung balls as egg nurseries. She buries a large roll of dung and deposits an egg on top of it. The eggs hatch into white grubs that then live off the dung until they grow into adult dung beetles.
