The Porcupine The porcupine is a nocturnal animal who spends most of the day sleeping in a burrow; preferably one with multiple exits for easy escape from predators. They are renowned for their highly developed defence mechanism and, as a result, have very few natural enemies. Contrary to popular belief, porcupines do not shoot their quills. If they happen to cross the path of a very hungry leopard or lion, porcupines will raise their quills and jump backwards towards their attacker. Porcupines are the largest South African animals in the Order Rodentia (rodents). They are vegetarians, feeding mostly on bulbs which are scratched out of the ground. The meat of the porcupine is evidently very tasty, as both beasts and man are sometimes willing to brave their dangerous quills in order to hunt them. |
