Highly social animals, lions form strong bonds, forming large prides. Prides have been known to consist of up to 30 lions. They are very affectionate with one another. Typically, there is only one dominant male, who fathers all the lion cubs in a pride, but sometimes other males are tolerated. However, fathers will usually chase off their male cubs once they reach maturity. Their social hierarchy is not clearly established, with the male lion mating with several females.
