A grand painting of a herd, or ‘dazzle’, of zebras in the Kruger National Park. This massive watercolour is a stunning showpiece that needs to be seen in person.
Please note: the background of this painting is white, in the same style as Sue’s other works. The colouration in this image is due to the fact that it’s a photograph, as there is no digital image of the artwork. Original painting of zebras entitled Daytime Dazzle. Original watercolour painting by South African wildlife artist Sue Dickinson. A group or herd of zebras depicted in an original watercolour watercolor painting.
No two Zebra have the same striping, as in fingerprints in humans the stripes of Zebra are unique to an individual. The Burchell’s Zebra is the national animal of Botswana and is found on the coat of arms of the country. Each species of zebra has a different general pattern of stripes. The Grevy’s zebra has very thin stripes. The mountain zebra has vertical stripes on its neck and torso, but horizontal stripes on its haunches. Some subspecies of plains zebras have brownish stripes between the black stripes.
It is believed that the zebra’s stripes work like camouflage, according to the National Geographic. When zebras stand together, it is harder for predators to determine how many zebras are in the group. In addition, the stripes possibly work as a natural sunscreen.
Each zebra’s stripes are unique. Just as no two human fingerprints are alike, no two zebras have the same stripe pattern.
