She has perfected the art of painting animals. The leopard is possibly her favourite subject, because of its rarity and beauty. Enjoying painting zebras and other animals too, because her style has remained clean and uncluttered.

Her experience has taught her that “what you leave out is just as important as what you put in”. As a result, her stark, clean images concentrate exclusively on the animal as well as conveying the wide-open spaces of Africa.

Precision is required to paint their spots accurately. Their spots change in shape, describing the form of the leopard in space. Curving around the body, they create a three-dimensional effect. Sue Dickinson first draws the leopard with great care. Drawing in shapes like puddles, because this guides her when she starts to paint. Drawing has to be light and delicate so that the pencil marks don’t lift when painting.
